Dental Exams and X-Rays
Twice yearly dental exams for patients of all ages are another important way to be preventative and maintain excellent oral health. With these exams, you can identify and take action on any issues that are discovered in their early stages, and avoid the higher financial costs associated with more in-depth treatment plans later on.
How it's done:
First, Dr. Derrick A. Johnston will examine your mouth visually, using mouth mirrors, assorted dental tools and high-intensity lighting. They will be looking for decaying or cracked teeth, as well as reviewing other important items such as:
- Medical history: The dentist will assess how any new medical conditions or illnesses may affect your dental health.
- Oral cancer screening: The face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums will be checked for any signs of oral cancer.
- Gum disease evaluation: Your gums and bone around the teeth will be checked for any evidence of periodontal disease.
- Examination of existing restorations: Current fillings, crowns, and other restorations are made sure to be in good order.
Diagnostic x-rays will also be taken, as they are an extremely important part of catching hidden problems, especially those below the gum line. Typically, bitewing x-rays are taken once every 12 months, and a full mouth series, or panoramic x-ray, every 3-5 years.
