Some of the types of problems that your tongue can suffer from are:
· Bumps and sores: small red or white patches that can be caused from biting your tongue or grinding your teeth. These will mostly appear on the sides of your tongue and may not be immediately addressed if it’s due to teeth grinding because you could be grinding while you sleep and be completely unaware that you’re doing damage. This can also occur due to tobacco use, like smoking cigarettes because the burning irritation of the smoke.
· Color: If the color of your tongue is drastically a different color, there may be an underlying issue. With a “white tongue,” there could be a possible yeast infection on the surface. This is called an oral thrush, which is what happens when the “good” or “helpful” bacteria in your mouth is killed. If you have poor oral hygiene, you’re more susceptible to this infection.
· Hairy tongue: This can be worrisome, but the only reason that a hairy tongue appears is because of the lack of proper oral hygiene. Since your tongue is being attacked by constant eating and drinking without any relief from brushing and cleaning, the bacteria grows on the surface over time on the small bumps on your tongue, which makes it look “hairy.”
