Composite Fillings
In order to treat a cavity, the decayed portion of the tooth will be removed and filled with another substance. This procedure is called a filling. There are many options to choose from when it comes to the filling material type, with the most common being composite and amalgam (silver) fillings.
A composite filling is also known as a tooth colored filling, given its ability to look natural amongst the rest of your teeth. Composite fillings help provide great durability for small to medium sized cavities, and allow for less of the tooth to be removed than you would see during an amalgam filling. Due to their natural look, composite fillings can be utilized almost anywhere in the mouth, even in the front or highly visible teeth.
When can a composite filling be used for?
- Decayed tooth (i.e. cavity)
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Decreasing the gap between teeth
How it's done:
First, Dr. Derrick A. Johnston will numb the area in which the filling is being placed, then remove any decayed portions of the teeth. Next a substance is applied to help open up the pores of your teeth for a stronger bond, and hardened and cured with a special light. Following this, the composite filling is applied in thin layers to slowly form the complete filling. After the filling has hardened it will be smoothened and polished to be a comfortable fit for your bite.
