Porcelain Crowns

While fillings cover just a portion of the tooth, a crown (or cap) encases the entire visible portion of the tooth. The crown, in effect, acts as the new outer surface. When a tooth is broken or decayed to such an extent that fillings are not a viable option any longer, a crown may be the best route to repair. Not only does the crown improve the appearance of the tooth, but it provides a protective shell around it to help strengthen, and can also help reshape broken teeth as well. While available in various materials, the most common crown is made of a porcelain mixture in order to give them the appearance and feel of a natural tooth.

How it's done:

The application of a crown typically consists of two visits with your Noblesville Dentist. At your first visit, a reshaping of the tooth, where some may be removed for the crown to fit properly, is performed. An impression is then taken to be sent out to the laboratory in order to make a well fit, permanent crown. Before you leave, a temporary crown will be applied to cover the tooth in between visits.

At the following visit, the permanent crown, fresh from the laboratory, will be applied. Before it is cemented into place, the comfort level and color (so that it matches the rest of your teeth) will be checked and addressed as needed.
